AdvertisementPanda says if you're going to eat a protein-rich meal, make sure you time it so it's not too late after dark. Randy Shropshire/Getty ImagesResearch shows that late-night eating prompts the body to overproduce stomach acid. This is advice some muscle-builders and other researchers disagree with — they say drinking protein shakes at night can help with muscle growth. Advertisement"If we eat a high protein load late in the night, then our stomach produces disproportionately more acid to digest that," Panda said.

Damage is shown after a heavy rain storm causes a small river to overflow into a neighborhood in San Diego, California, U.S. January 22, 2024. SAN DIEGO — Winter storms for relatively dry San Diego are hit-or-miss, but mostly miss, so the wallop of a Pacific front Monday stunned California's second-largest city even as it was expecting rain. It was the wettest January day on record in San Diego, the National Weather Service said. Residents in the Southcrest neighborhood just southeast of downtown had to be rescued by firefighters as standing water quickly surrounded their apartment complex, according to authorities and coverage from NBC San Diego. "At least in the short term, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot on the horizon for Southern California," Maxwell said.

CNN —Hilary has weakened to a post-tropical cyclone that’s still bringing life-threatening flooding and gusty winds to much of the Southwest US, leaving streets like raging rivers and residents ordered to leave their homes. “Areas that normally do not experience flash flooding will flood,” the National Weather Service said. Strong and gusty winds are expected to persist across portions of the western US Monday, particularly in and near areas of higher terrain. Cars were stuck in floodwaters in the Spanish Hills area, the National Weather Service reported. The Los Angeles Unified School District – the nation’s second largest school district – will be closed Monday because of the storm.

March 12 (Reuters) - At least eight people have died after two fishing boats capsized off the coast of San Diego, California, in an apparent migrant smuggling operation, emergency officials said on Sunday. San Diego emergency crews began a search and recovery operation late Saturday night, after receiving a 911 call from a Spanish-speaker about fishing boats in distress off the coast of San Diego's Black's Beach. "This is one of the worst smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California, certainly here in the city of San Diego," Gartland said. The U.S. Coast Guard and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Lifeguard division were still involved in the recovery operation late Sunday morning. These have included incidents of migrants swimming, traveling by surfboard or taking panga fishing boats to cross into the U.S., he said.
Life vests and other items are seen on a beach in San Diego. At least eight people are dead and several others missing in an apparent failed smuggling attempt off the coast of San Diego in one of the deadliest seaborne smuggling attempts in the region, local and federal officials said Sunday. The U.S. Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue officials said two suspected smuggling boats capsized Saturday night off the coast of San Diego near Torrey Pines as the vessels approached the coast. The bodies of eight suspected migrants were recovered and officials were searching for several others, all adults.
Northern California braced for more downpours as southern and central regions of the state got a break Wednesday from torrential rains and prepared for another strong system just days away. At least 17 people have died since late last week in these California storms that show few signs of slowing up. Josh Edelson / AFP - Getty ImagesThe heaviest rains Wednesday were expected to fall on northern and coastal regions of the state. A major system is forecast to hit almost all of coastal California, from the Oregon border to Los Angeles late Friday afternoon or evening. Santa Cruz County has been told to brace for between 3 to 6 inches of rain Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to Hart.
London CNN —Business executives, politicians and academics are bracing for a gloomy world battered by intersecting crises, as rising volatility and depleted resilience boost the odds of painful simultaneous shocks. Natural disasters and extreme weather events are seen as the next greatest risk, followed by economic warfare, failure to mitigate climate change and the polarization of society. The top five long-term risks were identified as failure to mitigate climate change, failure to adapt to climate change, natural disasters and extreme weather events, biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse and massive refugee crises. Climate concerns topped long-term risks in a survey of global experts by the World Economic Forum. The World Economic Forum’s 2022 survey put “interstate conflict” near the bottom of a list of risks that had worsened since the start of the pandemic.
